Reason magazine writer Baylen Linnekin asks in a May 2021 article if the new wave in home cooking will “become the new dining out?” I think the answer is yes as the momentum is building for Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operations MEHKO to take hold everywhere. A blow-up of similar online MEHKO menu sites like ohCM will most certainly spring up with array of LOCAL home cooked offerings. MEHKOs will give new meaning to the community term, “Buy Local.”
Linnekin’s 2021 article lauded Utah for joining California as the only states with MEHKO laws at the time.
“These laws are intended to provide low-overhead income potential to out-of-work chefs, stay-at-home parents, recent immigrants, potential restaurant and food truck owners, and students—anyone, really, who has “made side hustles out of their kitchens” before and during the pandemic.”
Lennekin, cited at the time, issues that showed California’s MEHKO law as being flawed when compared to Utah’s new MEHKO law. However, Linnekin complained Utah’s law isn’t perfect, either. “Like in California, Utah’s law also contains permitting and inspection requirements, which irks some. And Utah’s law doesn’t allow buyers to consume the food in the home where it was produced, meaning home supper clubs aren’t legal.”
“Thankfully, Utah dispensed with California’s awful opt-in requirement.”
